Procedure

I.           Warming up activity

T: Nice to see you, friends. Do you agree that our world is wonderful?

It is really so because our world is full of wonders.

In the 2nd century BC a list was made of the most impressive and man-made objects in the world.

But now it is the beginning of the 21st century.

II.       Introduction to the lesson

The topic of our lesson is:

“Our world and aspects of our life in it ”

You are invited to talk about the wonders of our world, to show how well you know your world.

So the theme is asking for and giving information and idioms in the vocabulary section which are used in informal language.

III.    Communicative practice

1)    Let’s start

The question for our discussion is:

What are the wonders of our world? People know the seven wonders of the ancient world.

P1: I don’t believe that today’s wonders are similar to the wonders of the Ancient World. They were all buildings  and statues. Now we can see technical and scientific achievements.

P2: I think computers have revolutionized the way we live and work. More computer wonders are yet to come.

P3: I want to add. Space travel is also very important. People could step on the moon.

P4: Surely nothing has done more for the comfort and happiness of people than the development of medical knowledge!

P5: The Olympic Games are very nice. Every four years countries come together in peace and friendship. We feel hope for the future of mankind.

P6: The internet plays a very important role. People can communicate even if they don’t know each other.

P7: I think the main wonder of the modern world is simply that we are still here. We have bombs that could destroy the world but we do not use them. We live here. This is surely the greatest wonder of all!

2)    Listening comprehension

T: You are going to listen to three  people giving the ideas of the wonders of the modern world. Compare their wonders and your  wonders. Then try to feel the card  which is on the desk.

          After listening

T: We get more free time with machines, but do we just fill it again with some other

activity?

P1: Sometimes we do, but very often not, because people become lazy, they are not active.

P2: I agree with you. But everything depends on a person. I know the facts when people forget to get their things out of the washing machine for a week!

5) Role-game

A radio magazine programme called “Worldly Wise”.

It is about the problem of forgetfulness in modern society.

T: In what ways do you think modern society is busier and more stressful than a hundred years ago?

P1: Now we have highly developed technologies.

P2: People do not do exercises

P3: We do not eat useful food.

P4: Sometimes one person must have several jobs.

6) Vocabulary section.

Idioms

T: You know they are interesting, they are used in informal language, sometimes they are strange for learners of English. You had to prepare some at home.

a)    Let’s see how well you can understand the meaning of them.

To get rid of – to escape

 All of a sudden- suddenly

The apple of the eye- a dear person

A piece of cake – without difficulties

To be broke – without money

To be up to one’s ears- to be busy

To cost an arm and leg- very expensive

To go Dutch- everybody pays

As sharp as a tack- very clever

Sink or swim- to win or to lose

Out of the world- unusual, wonderful

T:3) All of us understand that computers are very important. This is really a wonder of our modern world. And now let’s see how well you know the vocabulary which you need using a computer.

a)     Computer drills №81(CD) ex. 1,2,3 Stuart Redman “English vocabulary in use”

T: The world around us. How well do you know the words and expressions?

b)    Computer drill №43(CD) ex. 1,2,3 “The physical world”

T: In my opinion you have shown that you know the words are necessary to describe the physical world.

4) Reading and speaking.

T: At home you read the information about some aspects of our world. You had to prepare the answers to the questions in your textbooks. All the questions were sent in to a science magazine.

The questions are on the blackboard. I’ll read a questions , you will answer.

The questions:

Why do women live longer than men?

What man-made things on Earth can be seen from space?

How many new  words enter the English language every year?

Why is walking under ladders thought to be unlucky?

Why are horseshoes believed to be lucky?

Why do they drive on the left in Britain and in the right in other countries?

What is the biggest office in the world?

How clever are dolphins?

c)     T: Let’s do a computer drill №13 ex. 1,2,3

Choose some idioms which cam be connected with the wonders of our world.

P1: a piece of cake

P2: to be broke

P3: to be up to one’s ears

P4: to cost an arm and leg

P5: as sharp as a tack

P6: out of the world

T: Yes, you are right. Our world is full of different  wonders and the idioms express this idea as well.

IV. Lesson summary.

T: Friends, our lesson is coming to an end. I’m glad to say we’ve done a good beat of work and tried to do our best.

V. Homework. “Headway”  ex. 3 p.113

Choose at least two questions and research the answer. You could go to an encyclopedia. Write the answer in a similar style to the ones in the article.

Урок з використанням ком’ютерних технологій

The theme: Computers in our life.

Objectives:
       -         to develop students’ communicative skills;
       -         to encourage students in mastering computer;
       -         to improve the students’ skills in working with computer programs;
       -         to develop the students’ listening, reading and writing skills.
Equipment: computers, test tasks.

Procedure

I. Introduction. Greeting.

T. – Good morning, everyone.

I believe you will enjoy the subject of our today’s lesson. We’ll dwell upon one of the most important scientific discoveries of modern life – computers.

But before we start working I’d like you to read the following expression «Equipped with his five senses, man explores the Universe around him and calls the adventure Science» (Edwin Hubble, 1954). Let’s have a look at the results of people’s adventures.

II. Speaking

P1 Man is the most extraordinary thing. Just imagine the amount of inventions of the 20th century, among them we can mention a camera, a mobile telephone, a TV set, a video player, a fax machine, a dishwasher, a computer and others.

P2 It’s interesting to know that the word “computer” used to mean a person, not a machine. In the 19th century the people who did the calculation and wrote books were called computers.

P3 Today computers are used widely because they are more efficient than human beings. They can calculate the orbits of sputniks and spaceships, control machines, write poetry, compose music, and translate from one language into another. They are a great help to students, doctors, teachers, librarians, designers.

P4 How much information computer can store. They are ready to help people at any moment. In fact, they can do many of the things we do, but faster and better. Today computers control nearly everything we do in the world. They serve people in their daily lives and work.

P5 Schools are beginning to use the computer more and more because it can teach many kinds of lessons. Pupils have the chance to learn at their own speed. Some pupils can work slowly, others can work quickly. The computer tells them if their answers are right or wrong. The computer can help pupils to review if they need to. One computer system that is used in education is PLATO. It teaches English.

P6 One very important use of computer is in word processing. It can type letters, papers or books. It makes the student’s jobs easier, faster and more efficient.

T. Well, students, I see you know a lot about computers and I suggest you revising necessary computer terms.
